Former Owner Modern Beauty Shop

OCTOBER 23 & 24, 2026

Written and produced by Carolyn Jones Sullivan, Beauty and the Ballot Box brings a story of courage, civic engagement, and social justice to the stage. The powerful dramatization chronicles the extraordinary efforts of beauticians and civil rights leaders Mamie Love, Ann Brewster, Bernice Smith, Mercie D. McConnell, and Helen C. Teague as they quietly but courageously contributed to the voting and Civil Rights movements in Northwest Louisiana during the height of the 1960s struggle for equality.

Mrs. Sullivan offers a deeply personal and authentic perspective drawn from firsthand experiences and conversations she witnessed during her youth. Set inside an African American beauty shop during one of the most pivotal periods in American history, this production brings to life the conversations, sacrifices, fears, hopes, and determination that existed not only within the walls of Modern Beauty Shop, but also within the hearts and minds of a people seeking justice and equal opportunity.

After attending a rally and hearing the late Martin Luther King Jr. speak in Shreveport, these women transformed their beauty shop into a platform for mobilizing minority participation in the voting process. Their story is one of leadership, activism, empowerment, and community transformation, yet their contributions remain largely unknown to many of today’s audiences… until now.

Originally presented in 2023, Beauty and the Ballot Box is scheduled for its next production on October 23 & 24, 2026. This presentation seeks not only to entertain, but also educate, uplift, inspire, and encourage meaningful dialogue surrounding civic engagement, leadership, community and social responsibility.
