Summer Film Series presented by Centenary Film Society & The University of First Presbyterian
Crotchety retired doctor Isak Borg travels from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his pregnant and unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne, in order to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater. Along the way, they encounter a series of hitchhikers, each of whom causes the elderly doctor to muse upon the pleasures and failures of his own life. These include the vivacious young Sara, a dead ringer for the doctor's own first love. Drama, 1957, 91 min., NR.
This summer film series will examine some of the basic questions of what it means to be “human.”In a world of increasing and ever-changing technology, we humans need to re-visit some of the traditional questions that philosophy and religion and the arts have asked throughout history: What does it mean to be human, to be humane? What is the difference between the human and the non-human? What does it mean to live a good life? (to name but a few).
The screening will be held in Theater 1, RFC’s 124-seat capacity theater with an introduction from Jefferson Hendricks Professor of English and Film Studies at Centenary College, followed by a panel discussion lead by Hendricks.
