Teen Film Council
Robinson Film Center’s Teen Film Council is looking for young voices that love watching, talking and making films, seek art, and desire to build a community. This free class taught by entertainment industry professionals is a mixture of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities in an informal environment.
Teen Film Council is an in-depth filmmaking opportunity for high school students in grades 9-12. There are also a limited number of slots for 8th graders who demonstrate a serious love for film and are interested in becoming junior members.
Students will learn about all aspects of filmmaking, explore film history, program and market a film, create short films, and most importantly, learn to create, lead and speak as a team of artists. Teen Film Council also features guest speakers from throughout the film industry.
TFC students run the gamut of experience - if you’re an experienced filmmaker or just an avid film fan, there is a place for you. The classes cover a wide variety of topics, film genres, techniques, etc., but are also set by student feedback. We cover the topics you want to learn and discuss. While we will complete the majority of projects during class, students will be given short assignments from time to time to complete at home.
What does a typical class look like?
What are you watching? While students trickle in, we have snacks and talk about the things we watched that week.
Genre Talk – An instructor or guest will give a talk about something like the History of Horror, or Propaganda in Film. We ask for student suggestions for these.
Guest Speaker – A working filmmaker will visit or Zoom to chat about their job in film and how they got there. You can ask them about how they got into the industry, advice, cool stories from set, etc. Sometimes, they’ll stick around and help with an in-class assignment. We have access to actors, writers, composers, editors, SFX makeup, directors, etc. We ask TFC members what they’re interested in and book accordingly.
Projects – In-class film projects are usually groupwork. Most of the time we’ll plan, film and edit during class (or several classes), but sometimes we’ll send you home with an assignment to film.
Some topics we’ll cover are:
Screenwriting
film-prep
editing
lighting camerawork
directing
acting
special effects
