Partnership inspired by new workforce pathways in progress
Shreveport, LA –Louisiana State University Shreveport’s Director of Media and External Relations will be teaching a Film Appreciation class at Robinson Film Center beginning this week.
As a part of the Robinson’s Filmmaking 101 and Film Appreciation courses, Wendell Riley will be leading adult learners through a course entitled, “Film Appreciation: Film After Dark: Exploring Genres.” The class will lead attendees through an exploration of genre films with a focus on filmmakers of the African diaspora. The topic was chosen as a way to celebrate Black History Month and black filmmakers. “I’m excited to explore the diversity among the many voices of the African Diaspora through contemporary films by some amazing black directors,” Riley explained. “As a black filmmaker, I am always aware of the need for more representative figures both in front of and behind the camera, particularly in quintessential American genres such as horror, sports films, and westerns.”
Riley’s background in award-winning filmmaking makes him a natural conduit for LSU Shreveport’s goal of creating workforce pathways into the film industry. “This is part of a larger effort for the university to partner with local organizations such as the Robinson and Prize Foundation to provide workforce development opportunities for people of the region,” said Riley. “By teaching film literacy and technical skills related to the industry, we can create pathways for people to solidify lasting careers in this space.”
LSUS recognizes the cultural and economic value of the film industry in the region and wants to continue that legacy. In doing so, the university is currently developing more film courses and workforce development programs both on the degree-seeking and continuing education sides of the house. “We want to meet people where they are and offer educational options tailored to their needs,” said Vice Chancellor and Provost Dr. Helen Taylor.
“All of RFC’s classes are taught by local industry professionals and award-winning filmmakers, allowing students to learn from a wide variety of voices while seeing examples of success within the industry from their Northwest Louisiana neighbors,” said Interim RFC Executive Director Rich Hansil. “We’re excited about Wendell’s course and future opportunities with LSUS.”
